The story of The Harbor at Hickory Hill resident Jane Smith, from the small town of Lyndon, Alabama, is one of early promise and lasting devotion. Back in her high school days, Jane was a force to be reckoned with—a cheerleader and the president of her student body, graduating a year early with a clear sense of purpose. Her ambition carried her to the University of Alabama, where she not only earned her degree but also led as president of her Alpha Gamma Delta pledge class. A summer spent studying in Hawaii hinted at her adventurous spirit, a brief but memorable chapter far from home.

Love found Jane in a unique way—she was the one to propose to Malcolm, known affectionately as Major. After a day of thoughtful consideration, he said yes, and the two shared 53 years of marriage filled with partnership and community. Major was a farmer, tending to the family’s McQueen Smith Farms, and served on the city council in Prattville, Alabama. Together, they raised a son, building a family grounded in shared values and steady love.

Jane’s professional life was just as impactful. She spent several years shaping young minds as an English teacher to 10th and 12th graders, nurturing a love for language and literature in her students. Beyond the classroom, she led as president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, demonstrating her commitment to faith and community.

Though the details are few, Jane’s life reflects a woman of leadership and heart, whose quiet strength shaped her family and community alike. Her journey speaks to the power of determination, the warmth of lasting love, and the meaningful roles we play in the lives of those around us.

Mother’s Day is a time to recognize the steady, often quiet work of caring for others. For many, mothers are the first example of what it means to nurture.
