Resident Spotlight: Judy McGee

The Harbor at Hickory Hill resident Judy McGee grew up in the heart of South Carolina, the middle of five spirited sisters born to Tom and Mary Summer. Her childhood was shaped by the buzz of her parents’ beloved Summer’s Restaurant—a local landmark in Newberry, SC, still serving the community today. Weekends for Judy meant rolling up her sleeves and joining the family team, learning early what it meant to work hard, laugh often, and make everyone feel at home.

After graduating from Newberry High School and earning her degree from Piedmont Technical College, Judy devoted 35 years to the Newberry school system. Whether she was supporting students or lending a hand at the family restaurant on weekends, Judy brought compassion and commitment to everything she did. Her work at the school and the restaurant touched countless lives—her steady presence and warmth left an impression on all who knew her.

Judy’s story is one of resilience and love. As a single mother, she raised her two children, Tabitha and Butch, with care and determination. Today, her legacy continues through her six grandchildren and through Butch, who now owns and operates Summer’s Restaurant—a testament to the family’s enduring spirit.

Though Judy spent much of her time helping care for her younger sisters and working beside her parents, she always found time for a little fun. She has fond memories of playing pinball at the restaurant, with her dad cheering her on and even making bets on her skills. And for a brief moment in her teen years, Judy learned the art of belly dancing—a whimsical chapter that hints at her playful, adventurous spirit.

Judy McGee’s life is woven from hard work, family devotion, and a joyful embrace of every opportunity. Whether in the kitchen, the classroom, or among friends and family, she’s always brought heart and humor to those around her.

Mother’s Day is a time to recognize the steady, often quiet work of caring for others. For many, mothers are the first example of what it means to nurture.
