Resident Spotlight: Virginia Jones

Spend a little time with Virginia Jones at the Harbor at Hickory Hill, and you’ll quickly notice her warmth and quick wit. She’s the kind of person who makes everyone feel welcome—and she does it all with a sparkle in her eye and a melody in her heart.
Growing up, Virginia was nudged toward teaching by her mother, a gentle encouragement she initially pushed against. But life has a way of knowing where we belong. Eventually, Virginia stepped into the classroom and discovered something unexpected: a genuine love for teaching. She poured her energy into both junior high and high school students at Floyd Middle School and Jeff Davis High School in Montgomery, Alabama, guiding them through English lessons and music classes alike.
Teaching wasn’t just a job for Virginia—it was a calling. She remembers the moments when a student’s eyes would light up with understanding, those small epiphanies that made every long day worthwhile. Her impact went beyond the classroom, too. For years, she spent her Sundays playing piano at church, sharing her love of music with the congregation and even taking time to teach others how to play. If her weekdays were busy, her weekends were just as full, but she wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Though Virginia never had children of her own, she saw each student as part of her extended family. She gave them the same care and attention she would have given her own kids, and many of them remember her as the teacher who truly cared.
Outside of work, Virginia enjoyed a happy marriage with her husband, Bill. Their life together was filled with music, community, and quiet moments of joy.
Since joining The Harbor at Hickory Hill in November 2013, Virginia has found her own rhythm in retirement. She loves putting together puzzles, savoring peaceful naps, and treating herself to regular manicures. Her gentle humor and kind presence have made her a beloved part of The Harbor family.
We’re grateful for the years Virginia has spent with us—and for the many more good times to come. Her story reminds us that sometimes, following in someone’s footsteps can lead to a life you never imagined, one filled with purpose, music, and love.
